Houston, Texas · Medication continuity

Your pharmacy says “0 refills remaining.” What next?

At an H-E-B, Kroger, Walgreens, CVS or independent Houston pharmacy, a zero-refills message can interrupt an established medication routine. First ask the pharmacy to contact your usual prescriber and check whether an eligible emergency supply is available. If your doctor cannot be reached, a separate $39 virtual clinical review may be an option for appropriate non-controlled medicines.

Non-controlled prescriptions only. Review is subject to clinician availability and eligibility. No guaranteed prescription.

What Houston patients should know

Ask the pharmacy whether an existing prescription was transferred, a refill request is pending, or an emergency supply may be permitted. Under Texas Occupations Code §562.054, emergency pharmacist refills are subject to specific conditions and professional judgment, ordinarily limited to a 72-hour supply; special disaster rules have additional conditions. A MedRefillCare review is not an emergency pharmacy refill and is not guaranteed.

Common question

Can pharmacy staff give patients this information?

Pharmacies may share neutral information about patient choices, including contacting the established prescriber, asking about legally permitted emergency supplies, or requesting an independent telehealth assessment. No pharmacy referral agreement or endorsement is implied.
